On January 20th., from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m, I observed Emil Moreno, a reference librarian, at the South Regional Library in Pembroke Pines. I was sitting near the Information desk where he was seated on the first floor of the library. He was looking at the computer. Patrons would come up to him and ask him questions, and he would answer their questions; he would also answer questions for people over the phone. He also works upstairs at the reference desk. He helps locate information for patrons as well as ordering books for them. He will direct them where to look for the materials they are looking for. He will print information for them, if it is not too long.
He has a Master's Degree in Library Science.
He helps with the collection of books and other materials; he creates programs for the library patrons; he also shows movies as well; they are planning on taking up a collection for haitian relief for the earthquake victims.
On January 21, from 2:45 to 3:00 p.m. I visited the second floor of the library, to observe and interview staff there. Aby monitors the computer lab and assist users with their questions and computer issues.
Daniel works in Periodicals. He handles the mail, reference section; he handles the copy machines and the microfilm machines; he also processes new books. He will help people with the
using of the machines, eventhough he's not supposed to. He's been working there for nine years.

Charlene's Fifth Observation
ReplyDeleteOn February 17,2010, from 11:21 to 12:10, I observed the action on the second floor of the Nova Law Library. It was relatively quiet. The staff were stepping into the offices of their other staff members, talking to them. I wasn't close enough to hear what they were talking about. I didn't walk around the library, to see what was going on, because I didn't want to leave my belongings unattended and lose them.
The library has three floors. The first floor houses Foreign and Internationallaw, microforms, Government documents, and United Nations.
The Second floor houses Tax, States, Unclassified, Faculty Reserve, Florida Law, Reference,Faculty publications, Current Periodicals, A.V. Materials, Classified Reserve, Law and Popular Culture.
The third Floor houses journals,Admirality Law,Indexes, Regional Reports, Johnny Burris, Old Florida Law, and Archival Tax law.
The law library loan period for most items is two weeks. Overdue fines are 50 cents per day per item for regular circulating material. Reserve materials can only be checked out for a period of three hours by Shepard Broad Law faculty and students of the Law Center. Continuing Legal Education (CLE)Tapes can only be checked out by Law faculty, students, and members of the Alumni Association. Materials can be renewed if the have not been placed on hold for another patron. The Library hours are: Mon-Thurs. 8:00a.m.-Midnight, Friday 8:00a.m.-10p.m., Saturday 9:00a.m.-9:00p.m., and Sunday 10:00a.m.-midnight.
I always thought that the Nova Law Library was housed entirely on the second floor of the Law Center, and that the classrooms were on both the first and second floors. I didn't know they had law books and materials on the first floor and that there was a third floor.
